Visit to Village

This weekend we had the opportunity to go with Gerardo and Susana and their kids to their home in his home village. It is more of a mountain cabin, actually. We drove to the village then walked another 20 minutes up the mountain to their little wooden home, nestled among the trees. There's no water, bathroom, or electricity there, so we had our evening coffee and bread (a very typical Mexican dinner) cooked over the fire and eaten by the light of a torch they made out of a branch and a rag soaked in diesel.

Upon awakening in the morning, we helped them with the task of planting corn on the mountainside. We quickly discovered that this was not only a new process for us but for them as well. First we cleared the brush and burned it, then we planted the corn in the still smoldering ground. I wouldn't have been surprised if some of the kernels had popped!

Of course, there's always room for a little fun!
